Raised Bed Soil Mix: How to Calculate What You Need

Quick answer

Calculate the inside volume of each raised bed, not its outside footprint. For a rectangular bed, multiply inside length by inside width by the fill depth, using the same unit throughout. Convert cubic feet to cubic yards by dividing by 27. Subtract any sound soil already in the bed, then choose components with local Extension guidance and a soil test. “Soil mix” is not a standardized recipe, and filling a bed with pure compost is not a reliable default.

The calculator

Use these formulas for a rectangular bed:

  • Cubic feet = length in feet × width in feet × depth in feet.
  • Cubic yards = cubic feet ÷ 27.
  • Number of bags = cubic feet needed ÷ cubic feet per bag. Round the purchase quantity up to whole bags.

Convert inches of depth to feet before multiplying: 6 inches is 0.5 foot, 9 inches is 0.75 foot, and 12 inches is 1 foot. Measure the open interior between boards. If the bed is tapered, divided, L-shaped, or curved, break it into simple sections and add their volumes. Measure existing fill at several points because settled beds are rarely level.

Worked example: an 8-by-4-foot bed

An empty bed has inside dimensions of 8 feet by 4 feet and will be filled 10 inches deep. Ten inches equals 10 ÷ 12, or 0.833 foot. The volume is 8 × 4 × 0.833 = about 26.7 cubic feet. Dividing by 27 gives about 0.99 cubic yard. If 3 inches of usable soil already covers the bottom, calculate only the missing 7 inches: 8 × 4 × (7 ÷ 12) = about 18.7 cubic feet, or 0.69 cubic yard.

Suppose the selected product comes in 1.5-cubic-foot bags. The empty-bed estimate is 26.7 ÷ 1.5 = 17.8, so 18 bags is the mathematical minimum. A modest, clearly documented allowance may be useful because bag volumes, settling, and measurements vary, but do not hide an arbitrary 20 or 30 percent inside the calculator. Show the base amount and any optional allowance separately.

Choose materials after calculating volume

Volume answers “how much,” not “what.” Product names such as topsoil, garden soil, and raised-bed mix can describe very different materials. Ask a bulk supplier for ingredients, screening information, and any available analysis. Look for a mineral-soil component that supports roots and structure plus mature, stable organic material. Compost can improve organic matter, but it is an amendment rather than a universal substitute for mineral soil. A local soil-testing laboratory or Cooperative Extension office can help interpret pH, soluble-salt, nutrient, and organic-matter information for the intended crops.

When refreshing an established bed, avoid automatically replacing the original full depth. Measure the actual settled gap, note whether soil was removed with roots, and use a test rather than assuming every yearly addition should be compost. Mulch sits on the surface and should be calculated separately from the root-zone fill.

Ordering checklist

  • Record inside dimensions and the planned fill line for every bed.
  • Separate root-zone soil volume from surface-mulch volume.
  • Confirm whether the supplier sells by cubic yard, cubic foot, or bag.
  • Ask what the product contains; a marketing name is not an ingredient list.
  • Confirm delivery access, minimum order, and where the pile may be placed.
  • Keep the calculation and supplier information in the garden plan.
  • Recheck measurements before ordering a large bulk load.

Limits

The formula estimates geometric volume, not compaction, moisture, bulk density, or product quality. Irregular beds and uneven existing soil introduce measurement error. Do not convert pounds to cubic feet without a product-specific bulk density. A mix appropriate in one climate or for one crop may perform poorly elsewhere, and a calculator cannot identify contamination or nutrient excess. For food gardens on unknown urban fill or potentially contaminated land, seek local guidance on sampling before importing or disturbing soil.
